Dong Ethnic Minority

The Dong ethnic minority has a population of 2,515,800, gathering mainly in Guizhou province, Hunan province and the neihborhood of zhuang Autonomous prefecture in Guangxi. They have their own language which belongs to the Zhuang—Dong austronesian branch of the Sino—Tibetan Phylum and consists of southern dialect and northern dialect. This language had no written form until 1958 when the central government arranged for linguistic experts to create a vocabulary, basing on the southern dialect and using the Latin alphabet. However, the Dong people do widely use Chinese. They practice polytheism and animism. The Dong ethnic minority wrer descended from a branch of Baiyue tribe and they were called Luoyue in the Qin and Han dynasties. After the WEI AND Jin dynasties, they were named Liao, to which the Dong ethnic minority belongs. After the founding of people's Republic of China, they were officially named Dong. This is a largely agrarian community and the Dongs mainly produce rice and a special strain of rice which has a sticky constituency when cooked. They also engage in forestry. A national specially is oil-tea. While entertaining guests, the host will always offer oil-tea to them. The Dong people are proud of their singing and their district is called “the sea of songs”. The Dong's architectural art can be expressed by the drum tower and the “wind and rain” bridges.
